Hoopman is Gone: How is it?

The kids have their food and blankies so I have a momment to post here.

Eighth graders, you should be starting work day on your first solutions contract. Jake asked earlier in the week why salt water has different times and temps to boil(and melt), it's a good question.

Seventh graders should be working on your pressure contract.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I am really miss seeing the ways you all invent to show the must show. You were just getting good and your contracts were becoming more engaging.

  1. Howmany different types of salt are used to de-ice roads? I know of sodium cloride and calcium cloride.

mr. Hoopman if road salt is so bad for the environment overtime, why do we still use the substance?

  3. DUDE MR HOOPMAN YOU MISSED OUR LAST WEEKS CONTRACT LIKE 4 PEOPLE DID CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTS!

soluability is how well the solute can be disolved in the solvent

an example is like lava and a pen
the pen is the solute that is disolving into the solvent

the solvent is the lava that disolves the solute

  5. How come we need to learnabout all this stuff if we are not going to be scienctist is it really all that important to everyday life?

  6. Jack,

there are other ways to add traction or get rid of ice and snow on roads, but none are as cost effective as salt. or as well known, which leads me to...

    McKenna32,

don't sell yourself short, you may be a scientist some time in your life. don't close off any path choices in life at such a young age. if not, in the very least you know about these things that really do affect you whether you know aobut them or not. i can't send you on if I dont at least give you the opportunity to learn about the world around you, a chance to give some evidence to back up the choices you make. some day you may live in a town that wants to replace road salt with beet juice or salt instead of sand. what side would you choose? why?

    pania,

    DUDE!

    sam,

    there is a difference?

  7. How can you tell how much volume somthing has by Seing how much water it pushes out of something?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Lucus,

How much water does it push up? That is the volume. SOmething will displace a volume of water equal to its own volume.

  14. Mike, technically there are 60 different salts that we could use on roads. 20 of them are radio active. Which leaves 40 neutral ones left. Of those, at least 20 are deadly and would kill too much wild life. So, I'd say that we only use about 20 different salts.

  15. why do alloys have so many uses in moderan life

  16. I was thinking, if we spend so much money on salt alternatives and other things couldn't we just devote that money to space travel and see what technology aliens have? I mean if we did this couldn't we trade for new technology and save money in the long run? In addition to that we would probably gain so much in the transfers that it would pay for the cost of the space missions.

  21. Do you know why a liquid becomes a solid? Its beacuse when a substance is in a liquid its particles have high kinetic energy and when it gets cold its particles loose kinetic energy and slow down and heat each other less often and then the substance becomes a solid

  28. McKenna23 It is important because #1 you dont think right now that you are going to be a scientist but in high school you could be really good in chem. class and decide to mager in science.
#2 I'm thinking about becoming a CSI; field or lab.so even in the field i will kneed to know basic chem. and in the lab a more advanced chem.

What im getting at is that most jobs require you to know about things that right know seem usless...like algibera...U C?
