Grade 8: Dante's Peak

This week we travel to a volcano created in Hollywood.

Dante's Peak is a story about the second most desirable city to live in the the U.S. (population under 20,000), and the really, really bad day they have.

Enjoy James Bond and Sarah Connor v. Dante's Peak the composite volcano!

How do scientists monitor volcanoes in the movie?
How does the volcano affect the city of Dante's Peak and the surrounding valley?

  1. It's hard for me to watch Pierce Brosnan in any other movie, as any other character than James Bond, and the vlocanoe effects are kind of unrealistic because for them to not think that was an active volcanoe and then it does almost everything a volcanoe can do is slightly unbelieveable.

  4. This is really cool movie. I like learning by watching videos, verses reading out of the book. My favorite part so far in the movie was the scientist finding out there was acid in the water. It made the guy's boss realize he was right about the volcano errupting.

  5. how can you tell if a hot spring gets relly hot?

  6. I found it interesting that the acid of the water can rise from a volcano. What would happen if someone drank a high acidic glass of water?

  7. In the movie Dante's Peak the valcano explodes is that true did the valcano explode in real life.

  8. lasers to see if the mountains gets bigger.

  9. It affects the city by: knocking down buildings, starting fires, limits visitation while you're driving, the lava blocks roads, and it made the bodies of water turn acidic.

  11. The scientists in Dante's Peek monitor the volcano using helicopters and seismographs.

  13. This is a good movie but the grandma isn't very smart why did she jump out of the boat?

  14. keagan you can tell by looking at it and it would look bubbly because it would be boiling and if its boiling water, then its pretty hot.or you can tell by feeling the ground around the hot spring and it would probably also be warm.

    vegetation/animals killed by CO2
    temperature
    seismographs around volcano
study rocks to see when it was last active
acid level in lakes near volcano
    sample lava
    robots into crater

    tilt of the rock layers
    towns water supply
    check hot springs for temperature
    check sulfur
    gas readings
    type of volcano
    sound/wave imaging of magma chamber
    lasar beams!

How does the volcano affect the city of Dante's Peak and the surrounding valley?

    ash - mclogs engines
    pyroclastic flow
    bombs
    acid in water
    lava - burn houses
    contaminated/boiling water
    PANIC

  16. Wouldn't everyone have lung diseases like pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis? It's a lung disease by inhaling fine silica dust.

  19. So Mr. Hoopman what is the difference between all three of types of volcanoes?

  20. Jericho,

The amount of silica and other compounds that decide how well the lava flows.

If it is low in silica it flows smoothly and can travel farther away from the crater. This causes the volcano to have a wide and low profile.

Some are high in silica and the lava does not flow well, clogging up the crater. This leads to trapped gases withing the volcano which can result in explosive eruptions. These volcanoes have a higher, thinner profile because lava and ash that build the volcano do not flow far.

And some are in betweeners. They dont flow well, but they arent quite so explosive. This often leads to lava shooting from the crater as in the first type, but not flowing far away much like the second type. These form a large cone of cooled cinders and splattered lava.

  21. This movie was really hardcore stuff man. I mean with all the destruction and the volcano blowing up it made me want to promise my self not to live in a state with mountains in it.
