Grade 7 Week 10: Birds and Mammals

How are birds adapted to living on land, water, and air?
How do birds fly?
What adaptations aid flight?
How are mammals adapted to live in most places?

This week's contract again asks that you research a species of bird or mammal and report to class this Friday.

  2. Birds have grown wings to fly in the air, legs to walk on the ground, and many can dive into the water to get food. Birds also have lungs to breathe out of water. To fly they have hollow bones to make them lighter, and they have oily feathers for diving (they make the bird waterproof.) They have webbed feet and communicate by song. Different species have their eyes placed on different places on their head to give them different ranges in sight depending on what they need to see to stay safe from predators and other things. Their beaks are specialized to what they eat. They also have hard egg shells and nests to protect their young. They have high metabolisms to provide energy, light weight bodies, flight feathers, and their furcula bone helps them flap their wings when they are not gliding. they can glide because of the way their wings are shaped, when the wind pushes against the higher part of their wing they are lifted, due to the pressure and angle, that is why they need to be light.

Mammals who live in cold places have adaptations like double coats of hair, thick skin, small ears, and short limbs to keep warm. To catch prey or flee from predators mammals have different amounts of speed and strength. Their hair is specialized to be waterproof, keep them warm, keep them cool, or other things. Some have claws and teeth for protection or to attack prey. They also have sweat, panting (dogs), and body fat to control heat. They are endotherms and most have legs.

  3. some birds are able to dive in the water in order to get their prey, and some are so light, that they can stand on the algae in lakes and ponds.

mammals have lots of hair to keep them warm during the seasons. they have lots of strength and speed to catch their prey and they are also sneaky.
