Grade 7 Week 4: Mushroom Hunters

This week we focus on our first Kingdom of multicellular organisms: Fungi.

What types of fungi are there?
How do they get their energy?
Where can we find them?

This week we will go outside and 'hunt' for mushrooms at the park and around the campus. The goal is to show diversity of the kingdom and to identify what fungi we find in our area.

You are encouraged to go for a hike around your house and bring specimens for class.

A web album can be found here once it is no longer blocked by the schools new filter.

This weeks contract has A contracts inventing their own multicelluar organism. Have fun with it.

One type of fungi is the turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor)
you can find them in small orlarge areas of clustered trees and they get there energy by absorbing the suns light just like other plants.

There are mushrooms, yeast, and mold. Fungi are decomposers, they use there hyphae to break down dead plant and animal material to get energy. Mold is found mostly is dark, moist places; like if your basement gets flooded. Yeast is found in warm damp places. Mushrooms, can be found on a forest floor, around the bottoms of trees, on dead or dying trees, in places that have nutrients and plant or animal matter for them to decompose.

There are three types of fungi. There are mushrooms, mold, and also yeast. Mushrooms breakdown dead plants and animals. That is how mushrooms get their energy. You can usually find mold in moist places. For example, we had mold in our bathroom because our vent fan was not working so it got very damp and moist. The only type of fungi left is yeast. You may be able to find yeast in damp places. It is more common to be found in warmer palces. You can find mushrooms in many places. A good place to look is on trees and in a woods. I have found many mushrooms in the woods behind my horse pasture. They grow in certain places because they need to be able to decompose dead plants or animals.
