Eighth Grade Week 11

This week we begin our unit on the Earth's waters. We make use of our very own groundwater model thanks to UW-Steven's Point.

How does water move throughout the Earth?
What are the special characteristics of water?

Some questions we have had in class:
Why does ice float?
Why do belly flops hurt?
Why is salt water salty?

Contracts and Notebook Projects for this week focus on these questions.

I think salt water is salty because of volcanoes erupting then the lava going into the ocean and hardening forming oceanic crust. As this srust erodes the salt minerals insideitare relased. Also wehn animals dieand decompose the salt in their bodies are added to the water.

yea water does get salty because of what Haley said but if salt continues to add up that way, in the next 100 years would it be soooo salty that you cant swim in oceans cus its too dangerous?

or where else does the salt go instead of just sitting there not able to be vapored?

Belly flops hurt because in a water droplet there are bonds of hydrogen and oxygen molecules and they stick together because the oxygen really want something to hang onto like the hydrogen, and those bonds form a skin on the surface of the water and that process is called surface tension. When you dive in, there is less surface area to hit because instead of your stomach, it's your hands and if you do a belly flop, more force is applied because there is more surface contact between the belly and the water, resulting in more nerves in the skin feeling it.

water is wierd: it has one form while liquid or gas but two forms while solid, ice and snow. why does that happen.

Why does ice float when its a solid and normally solids sink in there liquid form????????????

why is water H2O not H3O2?

Cody said...

What is surface tension.

why is water so important to sustain life on earth?

Why is water stable?

Unknown said...

water expands when it freezes. that means ice is less dense than water so it floats. Most solids sink when placed in their liquid form because those materials condense when solidifying makeing them more dense so they sink. ice does the opposite making it float.

Why does the water cycle keep happening every second of the day?

how is water the gateway to allowing life?

Steven said...

why does salt water de-hydrate you but fresh water hydrates you?

Daniel Schwartz said...

water is the gateway to allowing life because most land animals and humans need water to run food through their digestive system, sweat to keep body temperature stable, and get rid of waste from the body.

I think that salt water gets salty because salt may be in the rocks in the water, then the salt from the rocks is released into the water.

I really don't get the unit because I don't know what makes water unqie so I think I'm starting to get it ok

where does saturation occur?

What is transperation?

steven,
salt absorbs moisture. thats why we use it to clear icy sidewalks

Why is water wet?

Mark said...

pania,
living things actually need the sodium from salt so they can get some of it from water.

Mark said...

surface tension is the slight charge coming from the surface of the water. for example, if you put your finger close enough to the surface, the top layer will come up to your skin.

Why do they call water h2o and not h3n6

Yeah and why does fresh water become salt water and th other way around too

ok water is very weird, but cool, if it wasent for water life as we know it would be dead! But what happens when the fresh water on our plant runs out? How will life survie?? How did all the water get on the plant in the first place?

What's the difference between a geyser and a hot spring?

oh i see Mark.
anyone else no where the salt would go instead of fishes?
