1.1: Atomic Structure

This week we begin our physical science unit with a look at the basic building materials of our universe: Elements.

A few questions:
What is the structure of an atom?
How does this structure influence the properties of the element?

...and your questions:
What are protons, neutrons, and electrons made of?
Can those subatomic particles change their shape?
How do we know that those particles are even there?
How do stars create elements?
Why do elements give off certain colors?
How do ions form?
Why do atoms combine with other atoms instead of staying as just one atom?
What keeps electrons from becoming attached to protons in the nucleus?

Challenge: Physicists try to describe our vast universe by studying the smallest parts of an atom in Quantum Physics. Try and explain the Quantum Theory. What is Quanta? Explain the String Theory.

We crossover with the unique element writing project for Language Arts. This week, show the structure of your element by building a model for Contract 19.

The question we picked: How do stars create elements?

Our answer: Small stars begin by fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores. After a couple billion years, the hydrogen runs and the stars being to collapse inward.
Larger stars begin the same way by fusing hydrogen and helium, but they have more mass and higher temperatures, so they can also fuse helium into carbon and carbon and helium into oxygen, and so on, creating elements.

Another question we picked: Why do elements give off certain colors?

Our answer: It depends on what type of energy is given off by the element. When copper is added to fire, the flame turns green. When potassium chloride is added to fire, the flame will turn purple. Again, it all depends on the energy that is being given off from the certain element.

Dear Mr. Hoopman,
The structure of an atom has electrons, neutrons, protons and a nucleas. Protons are in the nucleas and have a positive charge. Electrons circle the outside of the atom and are able to move from atom to atom, they have a negative charge. The number of protons in an atom decide what the element is. Also, if the atom has more electrons than protons it has a negative charge and vise-versa. Neutrons have a neutral charge.
Protons, neutrons and electrons are made of quarks. These subatomic have one permanent shape. Actually, scientists DON'T know if there really are subatomic particles but know that atoms need different components and gave them these names based of the charge they give off.
Stars create elements when they go through a process called fusion. Fusion occurs when atomic nuclei combine to form new elements and is extremely powerful.
The color given off by elements depends on the ammount of energy applied to the substance.
Ions are formed when one or more electron leaves or is added to the element. An ion is positively charged when one or more electron leaves, or when the number of protons becomes larger than the number of electrons. It is negative when the addition of electrons takes place.
The quantum theory is saying that energy is actually single units, like matter itself. It is stating that it is not a single stream of electromagnetic waves as we once thought.

Sincerely,
Rachel Holzhaeuser

Dear Teacher,

The structure of an atom is protons, neutrons, and electrons. More protons than electrons equal positive. If there are more electrons than protons in an atom it means the atoms is negative. If there is the same amount of protons and electrons in the atom, its neutral.
The number of protons tell give the element its name.
Protons, neutrons, and electrons are made up of quarks.
Yes, because the more protons and electrons there are, the bigger or smaller the atom will be.
We dont know that the particles are there, we jut assume.
Stars create elements by fusion, which occurs when atomic nuclei combines to form new elements which is very powerful.
The reason elements give off certain colors is because of the amount of energy running throught the element.
Ions form when an atom gains or loses electrons.
Quantum Theory is the study of interactions in matter and radiation. It's mostly the nature of mater.

What is the structure of an atom?
-protons and neutrons cluster together to form the nucleus; and electrons whirl around the nucleus

What are protons, neutrons and electrons made of?
-they are all made of quarks (massive particles)

How do ions form?
-when an atom gains or loses electrons; if the atom loses electrons the ion becomes positive; if the atom gains electrons the ion becomes negative

Protons neutrons and electrons are made up of quarks and quakrs are made of gluons. A proton contains 2
up quarks and 1 down quark and a neutron contains 1 up quark and 2 down quarks.

What are the different kinds of quarks???
-up
-down
-charm
-strange
-top
-bottom

Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses electrons.

What holds atoms together????
The positive charge of a proton and the negative charge of a electron pull them together.

Stars make new elements because they make energy by converting matter into energy as they make new elements by nuclear fusion.

Elements give off certain colors because when electrons move to other energy levels and then move back to their original level it gives off a photon of light in a particular frequency.

"good job buddy"-->

Quantum theory posits that energy must be "packaged" in finite amounts, analagous to money. You can spend 25 cents or 26 cents, but not 25 1/2 cents. Under quantum rules, electrons cannot "spend" (lose) enough energy to collapse into the proton, so happily stay where they are. They can, however, gain a finite amount of energy and rise to a specific higher energy level. Because specific energy translates into a specific electromagentic frequecy, this behavior gives rise to dark "Fraunhaufer lines" in the Sun's spectrum. The loss of that same finite amount of energy by energetic electrons explains the bright line spectra emitted by glowing gases, such as neon.

if this is any help..

Q.How do Stars create elements?

A. Every element in the world were created by stars. Except hydrogen and Helium which were the only elemnts created in the big bang.

Fusion: occurs when atom's nucleus combine to form new elements which is very powerful. All the stars in the universe, including the Sun, are fueled by fusion. Through fusion, stars are responsible for forming all the natural elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.

GROUP: ♥angel♥delainy♥logan♥taylor♥

Question---
What is the structure of an atom?

Answer---
An atom consists of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are in the atom's nucleus, or the center of the atom. The electrons are outside of the nucleus. When two elements combine, one gives off an electron. If the other atom accepts it, they can combine. Two safe elements can combine, and become hazardous, or vice versa. The number of protons decides what element the group of atoms, or molecule is. For example, Hydrogen is one proton. No element other than hydrogen can have only one proton. All atoms have the same basic structure.

A question we thought of is---
What decides how many protons there are in an atom?
*What decides this?
*Why does this happen?
*How long does this take?
*What is the process?

I answered the question:
Why do elements give off certain colors?

The reason elements give off certain colors is because of their atomic structure. When the atoms have a higher energy level they will give off a brighter color. If the atom has a low energey level it will give off a darker color, like purple and navy blue.
But the the element can also be reacting witht he oxygen around it. You can also heat the element to cause it to change colors. The element is also moving away from the nucleus somewhat changing the atomic structure of the element, and when the electron moves back it releases enegry in the atom, causing it to change colors.

Another Question:
How do stars create elements?

Stars are made of hydrogen and helium, and when they bond together they create the element deuterium. When deuterium and helium bond they create another element.
Since there is a never ending supply of helium and hydrogen all the atoms the two atoms create will keep bonding with eachother to create all of the elements. This process has to happen in extreme temperatures and where there is extremly high pressure. But heavier elements need even more pressure and extreme temperatues to be created.
All elements lighter than iron are created on regular stars, but any elements heavier than iron are created by supernovas when they collapse and explode.

The Quantum Theroy was first brought up when physits where 'puzzled' by light. Lines in the sun has been discovered and yet nobody can explain why the spectrum lines are there. Quantom theory deals with the smallest particales, atoms.
Max Planck developed a formula stating the energy is always emitted or absrobed in discret units. Which means it is not continuous.
The universe is composed of large number of mass and energy. Sceincst believe that there numerous copies of the earth and you! Every time someone makes a decision, and new earth is created. There could be an earth where the dinosours are still alive because the comet didnt hit the earth. Or, a World War might now have happend. But, in another copy of the earth sometimes really bad might be going on when here on our earth, we averted that catastrofy.
Is the universe infanit in time and space?
accourding to the Big Band theory, earth came to be after a huge expotion of atoms. for a fractin of a second, the earth was a huge fire ball.A peculiar form of energy that we don't know yet, suddenly pushed out the fabric of spacetime which only lasted another fraction of a second. After the first second, the universe was made up of fundamental energy and particles like quarks, electrons, photons, neutrinos and other less familiar particles.
will the universe expand forever?
whether gravitational attraction between galaxies will one day slow the expansion and ultimately force the universe into contraction, or whether it will continue to expand and cool foever.
However, sciencsts believe that if you point a huge number of lasers in one spot in space, you can open a worm hole distoring time=D

If Electrons can disappear and reappear, and we are made of electrons, it makes sence that we there can be other copies of us!

The question we answered was: How do Ions form?

Ions form when an atom gains or loses electrons. When an atom loses electrons the Ion that is formed has a positive charge.

The quantum theory:

Max Planck assumed that the radiation energy is emitted, not continuously, but rather in discrete packets called quanta. The energy E of the quantum is related to the frequency ν by E = hν. The quantity h, now known as the Planck constant, is a universal constant with the approximate value of 6.626.

[We don't know if this is right, but it sounds good :)]

How do Ions Form?
an atom gains or loses an electron to another atom (and that creates electricity) and it becomes an ion because it has to little or to many electrons.
BTW-when it gains electrons it is called a negative Ion because it has more electrons (negative) than it does protons (positive)
-when it loses an electron it is positive because it has more protons than electrons

protons-protons are made from other particles called quarks. Protons are made from two 'up' quarks and one 'down' quark.

electrons-Because electrons move so quickly, it is impossible to see where they are at a specific moment in time. After years of experimentation, scientists discovered specific areas where electrons are likely to be found. These shells change depending on how many electrons an element has. The higher the atomic number, the more shells and electrons an atom will have.

neutrons-neutrons are made from other particles called quarks. Neutrons are made from one 'up' quark and two 'down' quarks.

how do neutrons have a neutral charge?

Electrons are very important in the world of electronics. The very small particles stream through wires and circuits creating currents of electricity. The electrons move from negatively charged parts to positively charged ones. The negatively charged pieces of any circuit have extra electrons while the positively charged pieces want more electrons. The electrons then jump from one area to another. When the electrons move, the current can flow through the system.

(just thought that was pretty cool :D)

ions.-
Ions are atoms with either extra electrons or missing electrons.

Dear Mr. Hoopman,
Why do elements give off certain colors?
The answer is basicaly....
depending on the energy being given off, the electrons will be sent into quantum leap. Once the "leap" ( electrons moving from one level back to its original level ) the electrons will give off a certain photon of light and it will be given off in a particular frequency. It's just like the process that gives us the Aurora in the poles.

Question.....
If you want to try and find the meaning of,Can those subatomic particles change their shape, don't you need to know what they are first( and get rid of the word those ). If so then, What are subatomic particles?

Question....
For, How do we know that those particles are even there, What particles are we takling about? Also, don't you have to get rid of the word those?

Question.....
For the question, How do stars create elements, what is it asking? Before we even answer that question don't we need to know what stars are made of. If so, What are star made of? Also are all stars made up of the same thing, or some the same and some diffrent, or all unique in their own way?

Sincerely

..The elements give off cetrtain colors because of the energy levels in atoms and ions, the energy is essencial to the production and detection of light. Energy levels also called shells exist for electrons in molecules and atoms. The colors of dyes and other compounds result from electrons jumping between these shells.

..Ions form when atoms lose or gain electrons. After an atom loses the electron it forms a positive charge.

..Quantum Physics; Particles behave like particles and like waves. As shown in the Double Slit Experiment. Electrons can be in two places at the same time!
Why can't we be in two places if we are made of electrons?

..Atoms combine to gain stability and remain in the smallest state of energy. Atoms combine to form molecules. If they have not enough, or too many electrons they will combine to share with another atom.

..protons, nuetrons, and electroons are made up of quarks which are even smaller. they make up the nucleas. they have never been seen. we can tell they exist because their charge is detectable. all matter has an anti matter. quarks have anti-quarks.

protons are baryons and are made up of two quarks, an up quark and down quark.

neutrons are made up of three quarks, two down and one up quark.

electrons have been known to not have any smaller particles but some scientists have been thinking that boson and fermion mix together to make an electron.

this means neutrons and protons are really small, so they only have about a couple of things that make them up of.

Dear Hoopman,
these are our group's answers to some of the questions

What is the structure of an atom?

The structure of an atom is the nucleus which is made of protons and neutrons and then the electrons whic orblit the neucleus.

How does this structure influence the properties of the element?

The structure influences the properties of an element because the difference of one proton changes the element and its state color, etc. completely. and adding neutrons changes the mass of the atom and the electrons change the electric charge of the element.

How do we know the subatomic particles are there?

We know that the subatomic particles are there because of the charges and mass of certain things.

How do stars create elements?

Stars can create elements because when they die or explode many gases come off of it which creates elements and when they die they shoot protons everywhere and protons hit other protons and create elements.

Why do elements give off certain colors?

Elements give off certain colors because of their reaction to certain thigs such as flames. Also its because of what they are made of.

How do ions form?

Ions form when elements of the same kind have a different amount of neutrons.

Why do atoms combine with other atoms instead of staying as just one atom?

Atoms combine with other atoms because when one has a positive and the other has a negative charge they attract to each other then combine.

4. Helium and and hydrogen are the only elements that weren't created from stars. Stars create elements by Nucleosynthesis which happens when you put together an atomic nucleus.

5. Elements give off different colors because of their charge and how many protons and neutrons they have. Also, certain heats or surroundings may cause changes in color.

1. protons neutrons and electrons are made up of tiy particles.

2.no.

3.Very high-energy electrons have enough energy to actually penetrate into the nucleus itself.experiments showed the substructure of atoms by scattering alpha particles, it is found that high-energy electrons scatter to reveal a substructure for the nucleus. This scattering is due to the protons and neutrons within.

4.Three elements were present when the first stars formed. Hydrogen, helium, and lithium. Heavier elements were formed from the nuclear fusion and fission in the life cycle of stars, supernovae explosions, and cosmic rays propelled by supernovae explosions. Elements heavier than plutonium were created by man.

5.Depends on the energy given off and which electrons are launched into a quantum leap.. Once "leaping" occurs (electrons moving to other energy levels and then moving back to their original level) it gives off a photon of light in a particular frequency (look at electromagnetic spectrum). It is like the process that gives us the Aurora in the poles. You might have to study upon your chemistry and physics.

6.Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses electrons. When an atom loses electrons the Ion that is formed has a positive charge.

7.To gain a stable outer shell atoms bond with other atoms to form molecules.

8.The reason electrons do not become attached to protons is because of the zero point energy of the electron. The zero point energy arises from the Heisenburg uncertainty principle (HUP), which states that momentum and position cannot simultaneously be known. For example in a Hydrogen atom, if the electron is localised exactly at the nucleus, it's position will be very localised; therefore giving a large uncertainty in its momentum. This momentum will have the effect of overcoming the attractive potential of the hydrogen nuclues (a proton) and moving the electron away from the nucleus. The electron can therefore only exist in a discrete orbital: the ground state orbital.

The protrons give off a positive charge to the atom the protrons help decide an elements atomic number. Their can be a lot of protrons on an atom or their can be a few. Next is the neutron. The neutron gives off a nuetral charge. Nuetral charge means it gives off a positive charge and a negative charge so really they even out and their is no charge. After the neutron comes the electron. The electron gives off a negative charge in the atom.Their can be a lot of electrons or just a few their can even be no electrons on some atoms.
Q2:How does this structure influence the properties of the element?
A:All of these help influence the properties by they all determain the atomic number of an element. The atomic umber of an element is determained by how many protrons and electrons in the atom. The nuetrons dont really have any affect on the influence of these properties because it is netral so it cancels out one another so they dont have any effect on the element.
Q3:What are protons, neutrons, and electrons made of?
A:A proton is made up of two up quark and one down quark. a Nuetron is made up of two down quarks and one up quark. An electron is made up ofadient matter and one up quark.
Q4:Can those subatomic particles change their shape?
A: yes they can.

WHY DO ELEMENTS GIVE OFF CERTAIN COLORS?

IT IS LIKE THE AURORA IN THE POLES (WHICH IS THE NORTHERN LIGHTS).

HOW DO STARS CREATE ELEMENTS?
HRDROGEN,HELIUM,AND LITHIUM WERE THE FIRST ELEMENTS TO BE SEEN WHEN STARS WERE FORMED. THE EARLIER THE STARS WERE FORMED, THE LIGHTER THE ELEMENT WILL BE. ELEMENTS ARE FORMED BY NUCLEAR FISION AND NEUTRON CAPTURE. STARS THAT GO SUPERNOVA, THE NEUTRONS ARE LET GO AND CAN BE INSERTED TO THE NUCLI. IT HAPPENS SO FAST THAT THE NUCLEI ENDS UP BEING FULL OF NEAUTRONS, THEN THEY DECAY RADIOACTIVE. THAT MAKES A PATH THAT THE DECAY NEEDS ON WHAT THE ELEMENT STARTED AS AND HOW MANY NEOUTRONS WERE ADDED. THIS DISRUPTS THE ISOTOPES.
