Grade 8 Week 1: Plate Tectonics

This week we look at plate tectonics. We will examine the layers of the Earth and how those layers create geologic change on Earth.

What are the layers of the Earth?
What are they made of?
How do we know?
What evidence is there for the theory of plate tectonics?

This weeks contract can be found here.

Some of our evidence is fossils of the same type of animal that we found in eastern South America and in Africa. That's across the ocean!

I don't know if my first comment worked so here is a different one; part of our evidence is fossils of tropical plants in Greenland. Greenland is now covered in ice, so this suggests that the country shifted up from the Equator.

What evidence is there for the theory of plate tectonics? continental drift, and certain areas fossils are in.

Plate Theory- Main topics
* Earth's lithosphere is made up of big plates that move over the surface of the Earth.
* The major plates are the: African, Antarctic, Australian,Indian, Eurasian,Nazca, North and South America, and Pacific plates.
*When one plate shifts,it affects the nearby plates, too.
* Most large volcanoes, mountains, and earthquakes are where two plates meet.

The layers of the Earth are the inner core which is made of solid metals like nickel and iron. Then is the outer core which is liquid metals. Then is the mantle, the thickest layer and is made up of hot rock and metal, then the crust which is rock and dirt. And we know that they are they because of seismec activity and changes in our environment. Some proof of plate tectonics are mountaians, earthquacks volcanos, and landforms changing postion on Earth.

What is the difference between the lithosphere and the asthopehere?

how do earth's plates make mountains

how do earth's plates make mountains

lefeber's awesome said...

why and when do Earth's plates decide to make mountains?

lefeber's awesome said...

What are all the rocks and minerals discovered in the layers of the earth

lefeber's awesome said...

how do we know all this stuff about the plates?

cole meyer said...

the inner core is solid because it is under to much pressure to melt

What is the evidence of plate techtonics??????
I think it is the movement of the earth(very very slowly)while making hills and mountains. I also think it is the evidence of the ocean floor, because scientists have found younger rocks closer to the ridges on the floor than older rocks. After learning all of that information, I still have a thought that earthquakes have something to do with it.

the difference between the lithosphere and the asthopher is, the lithophere is many hard plate that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and the asthphere is like hot tar.

why didnt they be leave Wagener about the contenental drift

nathan said...

the plates move up under pressure to form mountains

Anton said...

Some evidence of plate tectonics is that when you look at a map or globe, you can see that many years ago, they fit together like a puzzle.

What happens at each type of boundary? Why?
convergent- the older rock goes under the younger rock and it forms a trench
divergent-plates move apart while magma pushes up creating ocean valleys or rift valleys
transform-plates slide past each other horizontally, crust isnt formed or destroyed

The layers of the Earth include; the crust or lithosphere, the asthenosphere or top of mantle, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. The Earth is like an egg the crust is the shell, the mantle is the white, and the yoke is the inner and outer core, but the shell isn't solid it's broken and it moves and shifts.

The inner core is made up of solid iron and nickel. The outer core is made of liquid nickel and iron. The mantle is made up of of dense and and mostly solid silicate rock. The Crust is made up of thin silicate rock. We know this because we make little explosions and see how long they waves take to come back to little receptors. No Mr Hoopman this is not like a big ultrasound of Earth.

i wonder if america was mixed with
eruope or asia

We know these exist because, scientists have found fossils of relative animals in other countries.

What are the layers of the Earth?
There is the crust or lithosphere, the asthenosphere or upper mantle, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core

Kassi said...

Evidence we can use are fossils found, Ex: Greenland had fossils of tropical plants and animals, faults, and earthquakes

Q:What is the difference between the lithosphere and asthenosphere?
A:The lithosphere (crust and attached upper mantle) is less dense but hard and floats on top of the asthenosphere, where rock is in a plastic , semi-molten state.

i learned alot and now i fineally under stand how the earth works and what it is made of. the contracts wernt that hard just cause i had fun doing it cause it was hands on
